Similarly, average wholesale electricity prices in India in the first half of 2023 were still 80% higher than 2019 levels, and in Japan they were 30% higher compared to 2019. Despite this, average prices in Europe are still more than double 2019 levels. European wholesale prices halved from their record highs in 2022, falling closer to their 2021 average. As prices for energy commodities such as gas and coal have fallen significantly in the first half of 2023, wholesale electricity prices in many regions have declined from their previous peaks. Wholesale electricity prices remain elevated in many countries despite substantial declines, although there are regional differences. These signals will have to be accompanied by updated regulatory frameworks to incentivise demand-side flexibility and storage in order to increase the flexibility of the broader system. Negative prices also provide signals to invest in solutions and technologies to improve system flexibility. Negative prices indicate generation is not sufficiently flexible, the demand side is not adequately price-responsive or there is not enough storage to conduct energy arbitrage. Prices on the wholesale electricity market there fell below zero almost 20% of the time in 2022, compared to less than 1% of the time in Germany and the Netherlands. Meanwhile, in other markets such as South Australia, which has a very high penetration of variable renewables, the trend was even starker. This was driven by strong renewables output at times of significantly reduced demand. The number of hours in which electricity prices dropped below zero doubled in European countries such as Germany and Netherlands in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. The outcome of policy discussions now underway could determine the future of its energy-intensive industrial sector.įalling electricity consumption in advanced economies weighs on global growth in power demand As policy developments abroad courting industrial investment put pressure on Europe’s industrial competitiveness, the European Union is at a crossroads. This trend has continued well into 2023, despite the prices for energy commodities and electricity falling from their previous record highs. Almost two-thirds of the net reduction in EU electricity demand in 2022 is estimated to be from energy-intensive industries grappling with elevated energy prices. Following these two consecutive declines, which together amount to the region’s largest slump in demand on record, EU electricity demand is set to drop to levels last seen in 2002.Įurope's energy-intensive industries have not yet recovered from last year’s production slump, as evidenced by the staggering 6% year-on-year decline in total EU electricity demand during the first half of 2023. This is despite strong growth in electrification with a record number of electric vehicles and heat pumps sold. EU electricity demand is expected to record a 3% drop in 2023, after already falling 3% in 2022. In 2024, as expectations for the economic outlook improve, global electricity demand growth is forecast to rebound to 3.3%.Įlectricity demand in the European Union is set to decline in 2023 for the second year in a row, falling to its lowest level in two decades. This moderation is strongly driven by declining electricity demand in advanced economies, which are dealing with the ongoing effects of the global energy crisis and slower economic growth. Demand is expected to grow by slightly less than 2% in 2023, down from a rate of 2.3% in 2022 and the average annual growth rate of 2.4% observed over the 2015-2019 period. Global electricity demand growth is expected to ease in 2023 before accelerating in 2024.

As you will learn from the exhibition, the contrary is true – Timbuktu was one of the greatest centres of learning in Africa. This evening I would like to share with you the background to the Timbuktu Manuscripts Project and the importance of this exhibition. For most of us, both black and white, who were schooled in English or Western and colonial modes of thought, the name Timbuktu conjures up the notion of a place of indescribable remoteness or even as a metaphor something mythical that does not exist. As you probably know, it was inspired by our former President Thabo Mbeki’s vision of the African Renaissance. It is a privilege and an honour for me to be invited to open the Bloemfontein leg of this travelling exhibition of unique manuscripts from the ancient African city of Timbuktu situated in the Republic of Mali. This exhibition has been made possible through the excellent collaboration of the government of the Republic of South Africa and the government of the Republic of Mali. Ms Winkie Direko, Former Premier of Free State Ms Crampton – Curator of the Oliewenhuis Art Museumĭirectors and Curators of Museums (in service and retired) In 2012, Timbuktu was once again placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger because of threats related to armed conflict. Our Honourable Guest Mr Diagayete from the Ahmed Bab Institute ( Welcome) Perched as it is on the edge of the Sahara, Timbuktu also faces the threat of encroaching desert sands. Timbuktu struggles to draw tourist revenue and develop tourism in a way that preserves the past-new construction near the mosques has prompted the World Heritage Committee to keep the site under close surveillance. But with major improvements to the preservation of the three ancient mosques Timbuktu earned its way off that list in 2005. Things in Timbuktu deteriorated to the point that, though recognized as a World Heritage site only a few years before, it was placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 1990. French colonization at the close of the 19th century dealt another serious blow to the former glories of Timbuktu. The city’s importance and prestige waned and scholars drifted elsewhere. In the 16th century, Moroccan invaders began to drive scholars out, and trade routes slowly shifted to the coasts. It was these profitable caravans, in fact, that first brought scholars to congregate at the site. Salt from the desert had great value and, along with other caravan goods, enriched the city in its heyday. This characterization had roots in reality and in fact continues to the present in much reduced form. Timbuktu sits near the Niger River, where North Africa’s savannas disappear into the sands of the Sahara, and part of its romantic image is that of a camel caravan trade route. Religion wasn’t the city’s only industry. Some fledgling efforts toward this end are now underway. There is hope that libraries and cultural centers can be established to preserve the precious collection and become a source of tourist revenue. Most of Timbuktu’s priceless manuscripts are in private hands, where they’ve been hidden for many years, and some have vanished into the black market in a trade that threatens to take with it part of Timbuktu’s soul. These 14th- and 15th-century places of worship were also the homes of Islamic scholars known as the Ambassadors of Peace. But the city’s former status as an Islamic oasis is echoed in its three great mud-and-timber mosques: Djinguereber, Sankore, and Sidi Yahia, which recall Timbuktu's golden age. Now a shadow of its former glory, Timbuktu-in modern-day Mali-strikes most travelers as humble and perhaps a bit run-down. Many of them remain, though in precarious condition, forming a priceless written record of African history. The great teachings of Islam, from astronomy and mathematics to medicine and law, were collected and produced here in several hundred thousand manuscripts. Sacred Muslim texts, in bound editions, were carried great distances to Timbuktu for the use of eminent scholars from Cairo, Egypt Baghdad, Iraq and elsewhere who were in residence in the city. Timbuktu was a center of Islamic scholarship under several African empires, home to a 25,000-student university and other madrassas that served as wellsprings for the spread of Islam throughout Africa from the 13th to 16th centuries. This West African city-long synonymous with the uttermost end of Earth-was added to the World Heritage List in 1988, many centuries after its apex. I love OTF, but Shred is way better (again, my opinion).Say hello to Shred415, Seattle's newest boutique fitness studio that needs to be on every parent's radar. To me, in a nutshell, OTF is like training for Shred. My husband still sometimes goes to Chicago for the sole purpose of going to Shred415. After starting there, I PR'd every single race distance I ran. I am a runner and had just run the Boston Marathon for the second time when I found Shred. In the end, it is the results that count, and I would say that Shred gave me far better results. And Shred would never abandon you to 21 minutes of repeating a few exercises-BOR-ING! At Shred they demo the exercises as you go, rather than all in one lump before you begin the floor segment, so there's no forgetting what you are doing, or trying to remember the move when they don't animate the exercise demo screen (as for that screen, in my opinion, I can do a workout video at home). Actually, they were much more on top of that than the OTFs where I go. Neither of those statements are true, in my experience. I read some of the commenters that said no one ever corrected their form, and there was no stretch at the end. I have unlimited at OTF now, but when I go to Chi, I pay to go to Shred. It seemed smaller than Shred to me, and definitely lacked the energy. When OTF opened on Wells, around the corner from the Old Town Shred415, I went and looked in the window. Some of them in Chicago are small, but imagine Chicago real estate. Shreds studios are way cooler, and much cleaner. They don't use the heart rate monitors (they experimented with it for a while, but I think the Shredders did not embrace it). Shred offers child care, which is huge for us moms. The speed increases are a little different, but if you've been doing OTF, you won't have any trouble. As a runner, getting that extra run time was very valuable. Some differences: Shred is a full hour, and you can get on your treadmill when the other class exits and start warming up. OTF is the best thing we have here, but it doesn't hold a candle to Shred-if they are opening near you, you are lucky! All we have where I live now is OTF, and I miss my Shred body! I never looked better than when I was Shredding. For me, it remains the yardstick by which I measure all other workouts. I found Shred415 while living in Chicago for a few years, before OTF was in the area. I’d bet when you hit the suburban studios it’s not quite the same. The age thing could also be partially because I live downtown Chicago. I’ll echo other comments that have been said too - their studios are much smaller, it feels a lot more crammed, and it’s mostly 20-somethings, but they do have great music. At first, I was super annoyed that my 60 minute class would end around 53 minutes and that included a warm up - but it’s actually sustainable long term for me. I’ve now been an OTF (unlimited) member for almost 3 years. I’d have to take a month or two off and then go back to it. I always liked Shred when I did it pre-0TF, but after 2-3 months on an unlimited package, I would feel fairly burned out. If you want to warm up you are expected to get to class 5-10 minutes early and they never led any stretches post class to cool down (probably because their classes are 15 minutes apart and the next class is trying to get in so they can warm up.) They aren’t kidding around with their format and it’s a full 60 minute workout. Small numbers of continental migrants are regularly seen in southern and eastern Britain during spring. However, they are now so successful, we can't survey them on an annual basis.īritish kites are mainly sedentary, although juvenile birds range widely during the winter months (records have been received from as far as Spain and Portugal), returning the following spring to the area they fledged from. is more uniformly dark and with a less strongly forked-tailed than Red Kite. There are probably around 1,800 breeding pairs in Britain (about 7 per cent of the world population) - about half in Wales, with the rest in England and Scotland. home understanding-birds birdfacts Black Kite. The English and Scottish breeding populations are expanding only slowly from the population centres, resulting in high densities of birds within the core areas. Non-breeding birds are regularly seen in all parts of Britain, and have recently become regular visitors to Northern Ireland. Kites have also now been returned to Northern Ireland and the Welsh population continues to go from strength to strength. The Scottish population is centred around the release sites in Dumfries and Galloway, Stirling-shire and west Perthshire, around Black Isle in Ross-shire, and on the outskirts of Aberdeen City. In England the reintroduced birds can be found in the Buckinghamshire/Oxfordshire area, Northamptonshire, Yorkshire, Gateshead and Grizedale Forest in Cumbria. The small remnant population that survived the persecution in the old oakwoods of mid-Wales has spread, but is still restricted within Wales. However, the Spanish wintering population, which includes many of the German and French birds has declined by 50 per cent in 10 years, making UK red kites increasingly important on a global scale. (On that occasion, it was the dog trying to chase the kite!).Around two thirds of the birds breed in Germany, with significant populations in France and Spain. Interestingly, I did have to visit an elderly couple, who found themselves staring at a red kite on their rug infront of the fire in their bungalow! I have a photo of the lady carrying out the kite, but for reasons of privacy I didn't post it. Even when work is taking place at the active nest (collecting chicks, for example) the adults usually just circle slowly in the immediate vicinity, keeping a close eye on what is going on. However, they are generally tolerant of other raptors away from the nest, with only the occasional 'tussle' taking place.Īdditionally, kites are not territorial, except for their immediate nesting area during the breeding season.ĭeborah, no, this 'mobbing' behaviour you suggest is not typical of kite behaviour. Deary me.įor obvious reasons Red Kites will not tolerate other raptors in their immediate nesting area. Just imagine 14 of them, all crapping to their hearts content, in a holding pen. The worse crapped-on episode to date, was when one of them hit the bulls eye. Red kites are listed under Schedule 1 of The Wildlife. It has now been successfully re-introduced to England and Scotland. It was saved from national extinction by one of the worlds longest-running protection programmes. Unfortunately, being close to kites on a daily basis, means getting crapped on regularly, sometimes at close quarters! So, if that is supposed to be lucky, I must be the luckiest person ever to walk this earth. This magnificently graceful bird of prey is unmistakable with its reddish-brown body, angled wings and deeply forked tail. I hope to learn a little more about this particular 'story'. Find out more about identifying all our birds of prey on our species explorer. Other rare species that breed in the UK include goshawk, white-tailed eagle and long-eared owl. They tend to struggle with anything heavier. Mottled yellowy-brown above and pale below, with dark circles around its yellow eyes and short ‘ear tufts’. Jack Russell dogs running around tend not to be part of their diet, however much people convice themselves they are.ĭespite their impressive size, the kite isn't a physically strong bird, their prey size is usually no larger than a small rabbit. Kites feed on primarily carrion, however they will and do take live prey, which usually consist of small mammals (mice, voles, and so on), small birds (usually the sick/injured ones). What does happen, quite often, in the Chilterns, is that people tend to think every large bird is automatically a red kite. I have even had one person telling me a red kite was 'circling' above her grandchild lay in her pram! I often receive emails and telephone calls from people asking me if kites are capable of taking dogs, cats, grandkids, etc etc. In the case I discussed, the kite was exhibiting normal behaviour (taking an item of clothing to take back to the nest, although in this particular case, it was a lady's favourite blouse!). I did a live interview a few months ago on the local BBC radio, about one of these stories doing the rounds. 4.1 earthquake - 15 mi north of Brawley, Imperial County, California, USA, on Tuesday, at 10:38 pm (GMT -7). In From the Cold begins with a newly-divorced American mom named Jenny Franklin ( Margarita Levieva) accompanying her daughter's figure skating team to Spain for a tournament. But this Netflix original is easily one of the best, even if it is somewhat underrated. Allison Keeneįor whatever reason, 2022 has seen the premiere of a lot of spy shows, quite a few of them on Netflix. This is a hero to unequivocally root for. The story of a vigilante-turned-principal looking to get back into the game because of drug violence on his streets is a refreshing one and helped keep Black Lightning grounded and relevant throughout its run. The first season also made a lot of smart choices about when to introduce the powers of characters other than Jefferson Pierce (a charming Cress Williams), and also didn’t feel the need to dispatch its Big Bad by the season’s end (though it did take care of a host of more minor villains throughout). But the series also might be the superhero genre’s most intelligent it knows what it wants to say about race and politics without ever being preachy. The CW’s dynamic series is laudable for a number of reasons, the most obvious one being that it focuses on a black family, and the second most obvious one being that its lead character isn’t a teenager. Just when I was starting to think we had reached peak superhero fatigue, Black Lightning hit the scene and shook things up. The ending may be divisive, and the series has certainly had its fair share of missteps, but the fact remains that Supernatural, all 15 seasons of it, is one hell of a ride! - Remus Noronha However, the first five seasons of the show make up one of the best narratives in supernatural TV. For first-time viewers, the sheer amount of episodes to watch can seem daunting and yes, things do go downhill a bit toward the end. While that's not entirely true, the show has had everything from an episode where Gandhi throws fists, to one where the Titanic never sank, to an animated crossover with the gang from Scooby-Doo. It's a running joke on the internet (mostly Tumblr) that everything you could possibly think of has happened on Supernatural at least once. And that's just the first two seasons! Over the course of its 15 seasons on the air, Supernatural has seen the Winchester boys go up against an ever-escalating set of big bads, all the way up to the biggest bad of all: God himself. Simple enough, right? Except that the Winchesters are monster hunters and their dad is tracking the demon who killed their mother. This landmark show that ran for over a decade begins with two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, going on a road trip to find their missing father. But by the strictest definition, a drama it most certainly is. Technically, it's a sci-fi fantasy horror road trip buddy comedy-drama (and I'm pretty sure I've missed some things there). The Outpost has overtaken Enola Holmes but the top spot goes to the brand new murder crime documentary, American Murder.Calling Supernatural (2005-2020) a drama is honestly quite limiting. Ratched is still rocking at the top spot despite Ryan Murphy’s other new title this week failing to break into the top 10 for the third day in a row.
